Things that make Mondays more bearable; a play

INT. ROUTE 8 BUS STOP – 7:24 am, Monday

A woman is standing with her hood pulled far over her head. Heavy rain is pummeling her and the other commuters. Zoom tight on woman. She quietly moves back and forth, without moving her feet.  Further zoom into black earbud underneath hood.

CUE EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY “OUR LAST DAYS AS CHILDREN”

I’m here waiting for the bus, starting a normal Monday after a mundane Sunday which was preceded by a boring Saturday. These days weave the same pattern over and over and over and over and…

”Our Last Days as Children” crescendos. Her face turns toward the sky, despite getting drenched.

Have you ever felt like a song was written for an exact moment in time? Like, right now, this Explosions in the Sky song was written for this moment: getting drenched on a Monday morning, trying to find the gumption to face another mediocre day. Then BAM brilliant music makes it suddenly more bearable.

The commuters in synch turn to face the oncoming bus. They all shuffle in a listless way, facing the brutality of another work week. She turns to face the camera, with a slight smile on her face.
